One for the kids - the animated story of a cat burgler in Paris.
Well, it's more than that really, for the plot has its dark side
as it follows Dino the cat's relationship by day with Zoe and
by night with Nico, the cat burgler. As Zoe's mother is a police
officer this dual relationship causes complications, to say the
least. Especially as Zoe's mother Jeanne is trying to catch the
killer of Zoe's father, who... well, best read the synopsis below!
Dino is a cat who shares his life between two houses. During the
day, he lives with Zoé, the only daughter of Jeanne, a
police captain. During the night, he clambers over the roofs of
Paris in the company of Nico, a very skillful thief.
Jeanne is on edge. Not only must she must arrest the cat burglar
responsible for numerous jewelry thefts, but she also has to oversee
the surveillance of the Colossus of Nairobi, a giant statue coveted
by public enemy number one, Victor Costa. The gangster is also
responsible for the death of a police officer, Jeannes husband
and Zoés father. Since this drama, the little girl
has withdrawn into silence and hasnt uttered a word.
Events will escalate the night that Zoé comes across Costa
and his gang by surprise. A chase ensues which continues until
dawn and will lead the characters to cross paths, and to help
or fight each other, all the way to the rooftops of Notre-Dame.

A dark tale of murder, thievery, kidnap
- yes
But a soft and gentle kids animated feature - certainly
No synopsis, however, can really do justice to the way in which
the superb (definitely Non-Disneyesque) animation gives
the dark tale a softness... a gentle feel as good truimphs over
evil. As a live action movie, this would be a very different film
indeed. As an animated feature, it is, very definitely, a kids
movie of some note.
A Cat in Paris has been nominated for an award in the forthcoming
European Films Awards... it will be interesting to see if the
European Academy members agree.
