Opera fans should keep eyes firmly on opera houses around the country. For while Paris, as the capital, is naturally the most richly endowed, good and often great productions also thrive at Lyon, Strasbourg, Toulouse, Marseille, Nice, Monte Carlo, Bordeaux, Rouen, Lille, Nantes, Nancy, Reims, Clermont-Ferrand, Massy, Metz, Montpellier, Saint-Étienne, Caen and Avignon.

France Musique the national classical music station, is transmitting a range of live or recorded opera and concert performances throughout the season, see here. One not to miss is this rare performance on Tuesday 19th October 2010 - a live broadcast in conjunction with l’Union Européenne de Radios from Théâtre des Champs-Elysées Paris of André Campra's Le Carnaval de Venise (1699), a three-act Opera, libretto by Jean-François Regnard.

Opéra Comique (Paris) - New production- Le Freischütz (French version, adapted by Berlioz) conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, with Sophie Karthäuser, Andrew Kennedy, Virginie Pochon, Gidon Saks Menton.

Opéra National de Lyon - Rolando Villazon directs Werther with Arturo Chacon-Cruz, Karina Deshayes, Alain Vernhes, Anne-Catherine Gillet. conductor Johannes Willig

Théâtre du Capitole (Toulouse) a new production of La Bohème directed by Dominique Pitoiset

Opéra National de Bordeaux, a new L'Italiana in Algeri  in co-production with Teatro Real de Madrid, Houston Grand Opera, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, conducted by Paolo Olmi.

Sacred music on the church organs of Avignon
Meanwhile an international season of sacred music -- MUSIQUE SACREE EN AVIGNON 2010-2011 a partner of the Festival d'Avignon since 1967, offers Sacred Music in a series of concerts designed to highlight the majesty of the historic church organs of Avignon and the  surrounding region. The full programme can be found here.
 

Concerts at Notre Dame des Doms cathedral feature l'Orgue Doré, a jewel of Italian organ building, installed in 1817 by Lodovico Piantanida.
