Viva l’Opéra – Live in a Cinema near You

The Paris Opéra Bastille production of Jacques Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann opens the UGC cinema chain Viva l’Opéra 2012-2013 live broadcast season around France.

Season opens – Paris Opera live in cinemas nationwide and abroad

In an echo of the hugely successful live broadcasts from the New York Met matinees that are screened in cinemas across France and the rest of the world, the Paris Opera and the UCG chain have joined forces to bring audiences here a similar experience. They have based their programme on live performances from French and other major European opera houses in a season that opened September 19, 2012 and runs through to 4th July 2013.

Reporting on the initiative France Musique radio presenter David Christoffel said surveys showed that most cinema-goers attending  the live broadcasts from the Met came precisely because it was live and the cinema performances are attracting new audiences for opera around the world.

Paris opera coming direct to cinemas around the country this season

First screening: Les Contes d’Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach, Directed by: Robert Carsen, with: Stefano Secco, Fabrice Dalis, Cyrille Dubois, Jane Archibald, Jean-Philippe Lafont: September 19, 2012 from Opéra Bastille.

This opera in three acts “exudes a unique fragrance, both bizarre and visionary, sensual and morbid… making Contes d’Hoffmann an absolute masterpiece.” In his study of Offenbach, Kracauer summarized the legend of  The Tales of Hoffmann … describing it as the true self-portrait of the man and the artist. Offenbach the king of operetta had never previously managed to write Grand Opera and died October 5, 1880 without finishing Contes d’Hoffmann.
