Gite Owners: Be(a)ware of Online Travel Review Sites




Careless or vindictive remarks by anonymous commenters on TripAdvisor and other similar ratings sites could damage your business.

What can you do? Little apparently.

The TripAdvisor website insists that all its reviews are ’screened’ for malicious or personal insults.  A spokeswoman said: ‘TripAdvisor is extremely concerned about review accuracy.’

Mistakes like those described can severely damage your operations. The moral?  Be pro-active in monitoring ALL travel advisory sites. (The bad news? A Google search for “travel advisory sites, unbiased hotel reviews, photos and travel advice” produced 30,200,000 results. Oof! )

It says that it filters out malice and personal attacks and yet its entry on another Blackpool hotel and its owner contains the following statement: ‘The guy is possibly the rudest man on the planet. Racist 100 per cent.’ … ‘There is nothing scientific about TripAdvisor’s assessment and our advice is to look at websites with proper accreditation systems instead,’ she says. No doubt, many of the named-and-shamed hotels deserved much of their criticism. I have certainly endured enough miserable nights in enough rip-off places to recognise the ring of truth in many of these reviews…”
