Libya – Well Quelle (no) Surprise

Others have warned it was coming and today the leader of the National Transitional Council was on French radio pledging to build a moderate Islamic state in oil-rich Libya.

The leader de facto of Libya, Muammar al-Gaddafi.

His remarks were later transcribed and rebroadcast by VOA – the Voice of America :
“In Libya, forces opposed to former leader Muammar Gaddafi, backed by NATO air strikes, continued their attacks on the Gaddafi strongholds of Sirte and Bani Walid of the National Transitional Council pledged to build a moderate Islamic state and urged his countrymen to seek reconciliation” but in the French radio broadcast version he went further and spoke of establishing a state under Sharia Law.

Quelle Surprise! As we noted in other blogs on the subject, no one should be astonished if an Islamic Republic is the outcome of the current Libyan revolution when (and if) Gaddafi  is fully ousted. Nor should there be any amazement if the Muslim Brotherhood starts a political party in Libya, as it has done in Yemen.

So what might be the outcome of this Nato-imposed regime change? Time will tell. But here is conservative US academic and Arabist Daniel Pipes on the battle within Islam: “It’s a mistake to blame Islam, a religion 14 centuries old, for the evil that should be ascribed to militant Islam, a totalitarian ideology less than a century old. Militant Islam is the problem, but moderate Islam is the solution.” Pipes believes that moderate Muslims “constitute a very small (but brave)  movement.”

And yes others have already pointed out that France’s Nicolas Sarkozy and the UK’s David Cameron likely opened a can of worms with their foolish military bravura in Libya.
