Contador Wins le Tour – Sheep Shake Pelaton

Spain’s Alberto Contador has claimed the Tour de France for a second time after winning a 52 km long individual time trial from Bordeaux to Pauillac.

Second win for 28-year-old Alberto Contador of Spain

Contador extended his lead in the race, winning by 39 seconds after a tough push from his rival, Andy Schleck of Luxembourg.

He finished off the 2010 Tour with a ceremonial ride into Paris wearing the leader’s Yellow Jersey, as top sprinters competed for the last stage win on the Champs Elysees.

Here is his race record

As the lads over at podium cafe note:
“At last, we come to the final stage of this year’s Tour de France. The race finishes with the traditional circuit on the Champs Élysées … the winner of the overall classification will sip champagne and enjoy his day in the sun. For the sprinters, this stage is serious business. The sprint on the Champs Élysées is one of the biggest prizes in the sport for the fast men, and it’s the only reason to drag their big legs over the high mountains. The finishing circuit is flat and fast and raced over the smooth cobble stone surface of the famous boulevard. As they enter the tunnel under the Seine, the sprinters’ teams will jostle for position. Then, it’s a curvy romp through the Place de la Concorde to the finishing straight. It’s always fast and furious.”

Meanwhile an unforgiving local flock decided they had the right of way during this leg of the race and for a while things got, well a little sheepish:

The climb up the 1 474 m Col du Soulor had been hit by fog and wet roads, and the mood worsened as the sheep shot out from the grass below causing some riders to put their feet on the ground to avoid a crash.

Contador, who was in front of the pack, got through the flock unscathed. Since 1947 the Col Soulor has seen twenty ascents in the Tour de France, including eight classified outside those ranking for the mountain climb.
