The Two Minute Hate?

“Silent Conquest” a shock-doc on curbs imposed on free speech in Western democracies by religious extremists, has just been shown in London but is not expected to be have a similar release elsewhere in Europe due to “hate speech” laws.

The documentary was released some two years earlier in the US and features much footage about the “impact of Islamist intolerance of free speech in the US, Canada and EU countries from Denmark and the Netherlands to France and the UK”.

According to the American Thinker “On March 19, 2013, in Washington, D.C., the Heritage Foundation screened the new film: Silent Conquest: The End of Freedom of Expression in the West. A panel discussion by four of the film’s participants, namely Center for Security Policy (CSP) founder Frank Gaffney, the Heritage Foundation’s Steven Groves, Free Press Society president Lars Hedegaard, and Vigilance, Inc.’s Deborah Weiss, followed the film…One focus of the film are the various “hate speech” laws throughout Europe, such as Section 266b, under which the Danish journalist Hedegaard faced prosecution for his comments about rape in Muslim societies…”

As the Washington-based conservative research think tank Heritage Foundation notes: “As shown in Silent Conquest, throughout Europe, in Canada, and even in the United States, judicial systems in countries with large Muslim minorities are under pressure to adopt Sharia free speech restrictions. As a result, in many places, including Denmark, it is now a crime to say anything negative about Islam or the prophet Mohammed, regardless of whether such statements are factual or not. The concept that even offensive speech is protected—so fundamental to the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment—is collapsing…”

The documentary was released by the Center for Security Policy and a full description can be found here

Nick Cohen a left-wing columnist, writer and strong defender of free speech has an interesting perspective on Silent Conquest, which he penned after its London showing. Writing in London’s Spectator magazine he says among much else:

“If you haven’t seen it, Silent Conquest is a documentary for everyone who goes along with the ‘Islamisation of the West crowd’. The producers say that it ‘offers a frightening insight into the extent to which Europe, Canada and the United Nations have already succumbed to the restrictions of shariah blasphemy laws.’…The standard liberal dismissal of such statements as ‘racist’ is hopeless, in my view, and illiberal in itself. As I have written many times before, history will judge my generation of liberal-leftists harshly for their failure to stand by their principles and fight movements, which are sexist and homophobic and, indeed racist…The film details how writers and politicians have been persecuted by the courts as much as by jihadis. Just because liberals don’t like them, does not make the denial of their liberty any greater. Hardly anyone says this, but it is obvious now that the politically-correct state and the terrorists feed off each other. When presented with men who will murder to protect the supposed honour of their religion, the state in Europe, Canada and Australia notes the intensity of Islamist feeling and instead of fighting it, appeases it. ‘If they feel so strongly that they are willing to murder,’ the state says, ‘we must step in, blame those who “provoke” violence, and silence them’. As it does, it endorses the prejudices of Islamists and makes the bolder still…”
