Listed as World Heritage it was designed by Maurice de Sully with construction beginning in 1163.

It took nearly 200 years to complete, finally being finished in 1345. Major restoration was done to Notre Dame in the 19th century, by a team led by French architect Viollet-le-Duc. It was at this time the great spire was rebuilt. The repair and restoration of the façade was completed in 2000 while most recently its peal of bells was replaced — see here for more details.
