Over the weekend April 26 and 27 more than 10,000 motor-bike riding volunteers will be found knocking on doors around the country offering a rose in exchange for a donation to help the fight against cancer.

The rose-bearing motards will be seen in more than 17 departments waving bunches of roses and urging local residents to donate a minimum two euros per rose as part of a fundraiser now in its 26th year. In 2013, the bikers sold 350,000 roses and raised 766,400 euros for the national campaign!

Bernard Braun the motard founder of the campaign writes on the association’ s website: “Since 1998, the bikers have collected more than 3 million euros in donations for the French League against Cancer “.

This year processions of leather-jacketed bikers followed by vans loaded with flowers will criss-cross much of the country in a bid to reach their most ambitious target to date — whatever the weather.

On the last weekend in April each year bikers and their pillion passengers rally at points around the country to set off on a crusade set up initially by a biker living in the Lorraine whose family had been badly affected by cancer. The Une Rose Un Espoir  ride travels through the countryside, visiting villages and hamlets, announcing its arrival with a raucous sounding of klaxons and sirens and accompanied by van-loads of donated roses.

Bike crews go knocking door to door on every street, tapping the generosity of the locals for a national cause …. “Our bikes provide the fuel and energy of the campaign … underneath the helmets, there are smiles, and in our leather jackets, there are big hearts,” writes Bernard Braun, urging the French once again to give generously to the cause.

This is a great fundraising exercise on the part of the bikers, and I hope they reach their target.
