Costas Lapavitsas teaches the political economy of finance at the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and is a regular columnist for the UK’s leading left-wing paper The Guardian.

France, he told Peter Jay CEO and Senior Editor of Washington-based The Real News Network, “is being asphyxiated in the euro zone because of its widening competitivity gap with Germany. As a result the French elite are very seriously discussing exit from the eurozone”, (as French News Online reported here earlier).

“Real leadership in France (on a crisis that has dogged the EU since 2007 and is still unresolved) is coming from the extreme right, (as French News Online reported here earlier). There is no credible euro-sceptic party on the Left in  France and indeed the Left in Europe has now accepted the European Union, where once it criticised it for not being a left-wing project,” he said.
