Paris Plea to Visitors: Share Your Love Without Locks – Unchain our Bridges!

Will Paris pleading via a hashtag (what’s that you ask) convince the millions who visit the world capital of love to drop an increasingly unwelcome habit of locking their love on to some of the Seine’s most famous bridges?

Paris City Hall spokesman Vanessa Panetto told world media gathered on the lock-ravaged Pont de l’Archeveche, behind Notre Dame Cathedral this week that Paris aims to persuade its millions of lovestruck visitors to take a ‘selfie’ on the bridge rather than fasten yet another padlock onto the cluttered bridge.

She said while the authorities did not want to appear heavy handed they were finally acting after a growing clamour from residents and non-residents alike about the unsightly metallic hardware that has invaded this and many other bridges over the Seine since the fad first started back in 2008.

She said she hoped visitors would be understanding and cooperative as “no one wants to have the police stationed on here to stop it” but that if persuasion failed “sanctions might be used”.

So as not to dampen the ardour of the romantics she said Paris has a new campaign asking lovers wandering over the famous Pont de l’Archeveche to resist the lovelocking urge, and take a selfie instead which they can hashtag and share using the lovewithoutlocks website.

French News Online was the first France-based website to report on the love-locks craze back in 2010 and has followed up regularly since then.
