Paris Mayor Takes Back Seine banks

Bertrand Delanoë the Socialist Mayor of Paris, plans to “take back the banks” of the River Seine closing them to traffic by summer 2012.

Unveiling his plans Delanoë says the pedestrianised zone will help return the capital to its residents. Paris papers quickly filled up with drawings and pictures of how the 40 million euro plan would change the City of Light.

Le Figaro had an artist’s impression of a night scene under one of the city’s famous bridges, with couples strolling hand-in-hand, cyclists walking their bikes and others taking coffee at elegant tables on the river bank.

First elected in 2001, Delanoë was responsible for the very popular and cheap bike rental scheme, the Vélib, and for Paris Plages, the urban beaches set out along the Seine every summer.
