This followed a day of solidarity demonstrations with the 4,000 refugees in Calais organised by left wing activists and Open Border defenders during a visit by the far-left UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The French broadcaster RTL said: “Despite the cold, in Calais on Saturday some 2,000 people demonstrated in solidarity with migrants and to demand dignified living conditions for migrants. “We are here in solidarity and to denounce the inactivity of the French State which is unwilling to provide a better life for refugees, “said Rino (22), an Italian student who travelled from Paris by bus and who said “a human tragedy” is playing out in Calais.

Protesters held signs showing their support with: “Calais, Lesbos, Lampedusa, our borders kill”, “Open the borders, let them go” among the slogans. At the end of the demo between 30 and 40 migrants of the several hundred who cut through a harbour security fence stormed the P & O “Spirit of Britain” ferry. They were eventually evacuated by security forces, according to Agence France Presse. Calais harbour authorities later confirmed: “the evacuation is now complete. No more migrants are on board the vessel. The removal by police passed off peacefully.”
BFMTV reported: “The Pas-de-Calais prefecture said police removed 110 migrants from the port, and 24 were arrested. Eleven members of the far-left No Borders group were also arrested by border police in connection with the incident.”

During the rally leftwing protesters sprayed graffiti saying “F*ck France” on a statue of former French President General Charles de Gaulle and Yvonne Vendroux that stands in the town’s Place d’Armes according to the Mayor of Calais Natacha Bouchart.
